FRIENDS OF NATIONAL PARKS FOUNDATION PROLOGUE
Friends of National Parks Foundation (FNPF) is a local non-profit
organisation working to preserve Indonesia’s wildlife and its
habitat for her people and for the world.
The Philosophy of FNPF is that we are all connected
FNPF believe that working in just one area is not enough. We take a
holistic, balanced and comprehensive approach which recognizes the
intrinsic inter-relatedness of human beings, our fellow creatures
and the environment.
As a small active Non Government Organisation we focus on grassroots
issues and frontline conservation.
We work in cooperation with many groups and individuals including
researchers, local communities, government, customary and cultural
groups, international volunteers and the global conservation
community.
Our work is highly regarded in many circles.
In 2004, our Nusa Penida project was short-listed for a Whitley
Award nomination.
In 2006, our Kalimantan project was nominated for the Equator Prize.
In 2003 Director of FNPF, Drh I.G.N. Bayu Wirayudha was nominated
for Indonesia’s Kalpataru (Hero of the Earth) Award for his work
with conservation. He has again been nominated for this award in
2007
Forest and Habitat Restoration
Objective: Restore habitat alongside local communities and support
the conservation of rainforest.
KALIMANTAN
* More than 70% of Indonesia's original forest cover has been lost
* Within the last decade, the wild orangutan population has
decreased by 50%
* Logging, most of it illegal, is estimated to destroy over 2.4
million hectares acres per year
* Illegal gold mining removes the top soil; it will take centuries
for the forest to recover
From weed-infested wasteland...
Reforestation in Kalimantan has a failure rate of over 70%, with
more than 2 million hectares lost each year to fire, logging and
land rezoning. Imperata, one of the world’s 10 worst weeds, then
takes over, depleting the soil and increasing the risk of fire.
..to carefully nurtured seedlings
FNPF and local villagers have cultivated > 60,000 seedlings
representing 47 varieties of rainforest trees. Seedlings are
nurtured for 12-24 months, to ensure vigorous root, stem and crown
growth that will help them survive in poor sandy soils
...to young growing
As at February 2007, we have reforested 100 hectares of rainforest,
and we target a further 100 hectares within a year. Currently, our
mature sites have a stable survival rate in excess of 80%. Our
methods have been refined over three years, and successfully
modified for dry lowland forest and peat swamp forest. Our
reforestation program is considered the most successful in Central
Borneo.
In all our work, we keep in mind the different layers of a
rainforest and the need for maintenance. A year before planting
precious hardwood seedlings, we establish fast-growing endemic
pioneers and nurse trees such as idat, gerungging and bamboo to
improve the soil and restore the microclimate. Once rainforest
seedlings are planted, we maintain the sites for 3 years, until
seedlings are strong enough to survive on their own.

we advised that the website www.northernmagic.com/fnpf was up and
running. Now thanks to the work of Paul Couch and the support of Dan
Hulsmann I am happy to advise that the original FNPF website
www.fnpf.org has also been updated. Paul wants to make a couple more
improvements to the layout but it is great to have our website “back
on the air” Please take a look and tell us what you think.
Orangutan
We are honoured that Mr. Endang Sukara (Indonesian Scientific Agency
- Biodiversity Director, and Coordinator of UNESCO’s Man and
Biosphere). will be our guest and will participate in our event at
Pangkalan Bun. Mr. Endang will discuss the possibility of
sustainable economic growth based on conservation; he has had great
experience, is very knowledgeable on this subject. And it is a
subject that is highly relevant to Tanjung Putting National park
right now.
Bat Conservation International
The project to conduct a survey of Fruit Bats in conjunction with
the Bat Conservation International starts early next month and will
run for a year. It will be conducted in the in the Tanjung Harapan
area of the National Park. We have been very fortunate indeed to
have Dr Matt Struebig offer his support and advice for this project.
He is an internationally recognized authority and will train our
people then join us in the field next year; both greatly
appreciated.
Estuarine Crocodiles
Arrangements to undertake a status survey of crocodiles in the
Sungai Sekonyer with Dr Rene Bonke are proceeding and we should have
more information in the next newsletter.
Carbon Offsets
We have started to look at the possibilities and opportunities
offered through Carbon Offsets and the whole Anti-Global Warming
effort. It seems we may well be many years away from participation
on any meaningful scale. A number of people from the USA and
Indonesia have been very helpful to us, but none more than Rezal
Kusumaatmadja and Sarah Conway of Starling Resources in Denpasar.
Hotels
We are taking to representatives of leading hotels in Bali about the
forestation proposals for Nusa Penida. This has attracted some
interest and we will be discussing the possibility of hotel guests
offsetting the “Carbon Footprint” of their holiday by planting trees
on Nusa Penida.
Garuda Inflight Magazine Article
The Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary and the Bali Starling release program
featured as the major article in the Garuda Airlines In Flight
Magazine this month. Thanks to our good friend Godi Dijkman who
provided both story and photos.
Displays
At the recent UBUD WRITERS FESIVAL we were one of only four NGO’s
with an exhibit. We will also be displaying at the DYATMAKA SCHOOL
SCIENCE FAIR in November. In December the UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE
ON GLOBAL WARMING will be held in Bali. It seems that only
associated bodies may display there but we have pointed out that
there seems to be no local NGOs represented and we have offered to
rectify that “oversight” and be an exhibitor. It is doubtful that
they will change the rules just for us.
Newsletter Mailing List
875 That’s the number for today. There are now 875 people on our
Newsletter mailing list; which is triple the number of six months
ago. That’s not bad growth in such a short time. Also the number of
emails being returned as ‘undeliverable” is getting less and less
each time as we sort out the non-current addresses. We do not have a
target figure in mind but 10,000 or 100,000 are nice round numbers!
Membership Donations
More good news is that membership donations can be made on-line
through the FNPF website by using your credit card. This is thanks
to the generous co-operation of Humane Society International
Australia.
As we have said before donations from our friends and supporters are
vital if we are to continue to be successful in our work, we cannot
survive on grant or deficit funding alone. Would you please become a
“Member” by paying a donation? The minimum donation is only 100,000
rupiah, but, of course, you may donate whatever you wish. After
rounding up, which helps cover costs, we think a reasonable rate of
exchange for 100,000 rupiah today is - US$12; UK 6; Aus$13; Can$11;
Euro€8; Jp¥1,300. For most currencies that is lower amount than
previously advised.
Kind regards from all at FNPF
