Der ehemalige Finanzberater, der seit funfzehn Jahren in Indonesien, davon die vergangenen funf auf Lombok lebt, sitz im Freiluftrestaurant im schicken Bungalowdorf. “Qunci Pool Villas”, das er sich in Mangsit, an der Westkuste der Insel hat bauen lassen. Der 48 alte Coffey mit seinem Alles-im-Griff-Lacheln ist viiel zu jugendlich und zu unbeschwert,um nicht Kalifornnier zu sein. “Lombok ist das neue Bali’, sagt er. Ausgerechnet die ARD hat das schoon funf Jahre zuvor erkant. Der Sender drehte damals die Serie “Das Traumhotel”. Eine Folge heiB “Zauber auf Bali” – gefilmt wurde aber auf Lombok.

Lombok is the better Bali: The Indonesian Island still has everything that its larger neighbor has lost long ago. "Because Bali has the better brand," responds Scott Coffey, exactly 3726 meters below [the tourists], at sea level. The former financial advisor, who's been living in Indonesia for the past fifteen years, five of those on Lombok, is sitting in the open air restaurant of the chic "Qunci Pool Villas", which he built in Mangsit on the west side of the island. The 48-year-old Coffey, with his 'everything-under-control' smile, is much too laid back not to be from California. "Lombok is the new Bali", he says. The ARD [German broadcasters] acknowledged as much five years ago. That's when the station broadcast the series "The Dream Hotel". One episode was entitled "Magic on Bali" – but it was filmed on Lombok. Coffey understands why Lombok won the beauty contest: over the last twenty years Bali has become a Disneyland of sorts. Too many tourists, too much development, too much hype. Lombok, on the other hand, is not yet overrun, its natural beauty is still untouched, the people are helpful and sociable without expecting money…
