TREKKING OF MOUNT RINJANI,
INFORMATION AND THE INSIGHT OF THE RINJANI VOLCANO
June 9th 2004 - A prestigious 2004 World Legacy Award for environmental and
social leaders in tourism was given to the Rinjani Trek Management Board by
Conservation International (CI) and National Geographic Traveler magazine, in a
ceremony at the National Geographic Society in Washington DC on 8 June 2004. The
Rinjani Trek in "Gunung" Rinjani National Park in Lombok Indonesia was the
winner of the Destination Stewardship Award, selected as a tourism destination
that best demonstrates effective protection of its natural and cultural

The Rinjani Trek was lauded in the award citation as a place doing superb work
in protecting its overall natural and cultural heritage, the volcanic heart of
the island of Lombok, Indonesia. Visitors to this tropical island enjoy long
jungle treks to the awe-inspiring crater valley, waterfalls and hot springs, and
emerge from the forest canopy to enjoy an amazing panoramic ocean view. The
Rinjani program is exemplary for its strong partnership among local community
groups, tourism industry and national park, and has successfully withstood the
recent deep dip in Indonesia’s tourism. At 3,726m, Mount Rinjani is the second
highest volcanic peak in Indonesia and is a part of the celebrated Ring of Fire.
Gunung Rinjani National Park lies within a major bio-geographical transition
zone (Wallaceae), where the flora and fauna of South East Asia meets that of
Australasia. The National Park, one of over 40 throughout Indonesia, was
established in 1997. For the people of Lombok, Sasak and Balinese alike, Mount
Rinjani is revered as a sacred place and abode of deities The World Legacy Award
is unique for its focus on environmental responsibility and respecting cultural
heritage. Nearly 100 applicants from more than 40 countries on six continents
were considered.
TREKKING RINJANI VOLCANO INFORMATION
Our Guides and Porters:
We hire only professional mountain guide and porters from the nearest villages
in the area of Rinjani National Park who has pass the guiding and handling test
and hold a valid guide license. Lombok Trekking is keen to develop the Eco
Tourism Concept, giving as much as benefit to the local community to improve
their standard of living. 5% from the net income is donated to support education
for the poor children in isolated villages.
Spring Water:
Fresh water springs are a feature of the trek and determine campsites. Your
guide Know where these are. During the drier months (July - September) some
springs completely disappear. Park staff and guides constantly monitor these
water sources to determine their abundance.
Park Fees:
Fees are paid at the Rinjani Trek Center at Rp. 75,000/person/entry. They
contribute to the protection, maintenance and management of the national park,
rinjani trek route, village attractions and visitor.

ITINERARY
Day 01
Early flight to Lombok. From the Capital, Mataram, we take a 2 hour bus journey
to Senaru, located on the northern slopes of Rinjani. Here we explore
magnificent waterfalls, visit Sasak villages and meet and greet our Porters for
the trek. ( D )
Day 02
Another early start for the beginning of a challenging 8 hour day. We walk
through pristine rain forest, with tremendous opportunities for viewing
wildlife. Camp is made just below the crater rim. (B, L, D)
Day 03
After a delicious breakfast, we head up to the volcano’s rim for a sitting of
the awesome caldera, its lake and the summit of Rinjani. Camp will be made on
the shores of the lake. (B, L, D)
Day 04
Today will be spent relaxing in the nearby hot springs and exploring the
steaming Milk caves. After a satisfying lunch it’s a grueling trek up the other
side of the caldera to base camp. Sunset from here is awesome.(B, L, D)
Day 05
Summit day begins at 2.30am. We climb several ridges for 3-4 hours until we
reach the true summit of Rinjani. The views across Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa are
spectacular. It’s then a long down hill trek to Sembalun Lawang and directly
Transfer to Hati suci Home stay and Restaurant. Stay over night.(B, L, D) -
Dinner is set as a buffet
Day 06
The last day of the trek is spent recouping and traveling to the coast for a
much deserved massage and rest. The night is spent in one of Lombok’s finest
hotels on the famous Sengiggi beach.( (B, L, D) Dinner is set as a buffet at
local cafe and restaurant.
Day 07
In complete contrast to the mountain, we head out on a boat to Gili Trawangan
for snorkeling, fishing and relaxing. You can now sit back, reflect and enjoy
the feeling of being a Rinjani summiteers. (B, L, D) Lunch and Dinner is set as
a buffet at local cafe and restaurant.
Day 08
Free program to explore Senggigi until transfer to Airport for your flight to
