Orangutan Trip and Dayak "head hunter" Tribe Journey, get ready for the most wonderful experience of your life.
we would like to thank you for the wonderful trip in Borneo,
everything was perfect. Our guide Mr. Arsyad has always been very
nice and helpful. No problem at all with English, rather, we have
learnt some Dayak language, too. The crew was very skilled and Mr.
Japar is an excellent cooker, even for vegetarians. We still miss
his "tempe goreng" and tofu. He even prepared banana cookies for us
in the klotok!
We visited
Tanjung Puting National Park and we had many touching contacts
with orangutans. The
three days tour we spent sailing the river with the klotok boat were amazing: we saw proboscis monkeys, gibbons and
birds. Then we went up the river to the Dayak villages by speed
boat. We reached Bayat, Kahingai and Bakonsu. We always found very
warm and friendly people that showed us their usages and habits. We
had the honour of eating and sleeping in their houses, even in
places where few people from outside use to come. We saw what
remains of head hunters tradition and we have really appreciated
people's warm welcome.
Then we visited the thick Bornean jungle and, finally, a nice white
sand island just near the coast before leaving from Kalimantan.
We hope to come back to this
wonderful country one day and to meet again our friends.

Carissimo Gilang,
magnifici: abbiamo visto scimmie nasiche, gibboni e uccelli. Poi
Orangutan
The Orangutan is a great ape with long arms and reddish brown fur.
Orangutans are presently found only in rainforests on Borneo and
Sumatra, though they were once widely distributed in southeast Asia
(as far as southern China). Today orangutans are highly endangered
in the wild due to habitat loss (the destruction of rainforests for
logging and agriculture) and the illegal trapping of baby orangutans
for the pet trade. WWF estimates there were around 55,000 Bornean
orangutans in 2004, but the number has since dropped largely as a
result of widespread forest fires and increased clearing for oil
palm plantations. In August 2006, the Wildlife Conservation
Society-Indonesia Program said that Indonesia's population of
orangutans stands at 20,000, down from 35,000 in 1996. Due to its
slow rate of reproduction, environmental groups have warned that red
ape could go extinct in the wild without urgent conservation
measures. Genetic analysis has recently concluded that there are
three subspecies of orangutan in Borneo: Pongo pygmaeus morio, the
Northeastern Borneo orang-utan, Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii, the Central
Borneo orang-utan and Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus, the Northwest Borneo
orang-utan. For more on the orangutan, take a look at

Dayak Tribe
Dayak is a name of tribes that identifies the various indigenous
peoples on the island of Borneo by the Indonesian part known as
Kalimantan. They are divided into about 450 ethno-linguistic groups.
Despite some differences, these group share physical features,
architecture, language, an oral tradition, customs, social
structure, weapons, agricultural technology and a similar outlook on
life.
Dayak population estimated at about four million spread over the
four Indonesian provinces in Kalimantan / Borneo, the Malaysian
territories of Sabah and Serawak and Brunei Darussalam. In Sabah,
the Dayak are known as Kadazandusun.
In the past, anthropologists described the Dayak as the "legendary
natives of Borneo" who lived in longhouse and engaged in
head-hunting. Today, they form a small minority, the loser in an era
of swift change and modernization.
The original Dayak identity their cultural, economic, religious and
political life has been preserved through their oral tradition.
Experts agree that there are many basic affinitive in the legends
of the various Dayak groups. Sadly, though, all the original
elements of Dayak life as described in the legends have suffered
significantly from external elements.
The Dayak or Dyak are a people indigenous to Borneo. It is a loose
term for over 200 riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups,
located principally in the interior of Borneo, each with its own
dialect, customs, laws, territory and culture, although common
distinguishing traits are readily identifiable. Dayak languages are
categorised as part of the Austronesian languages in Asia. The Dayak
were animist in belief; however many converted to Christianity, and
some to Islam more recently. Estimates for the Dayak population
range from 2 to 4 million.
